How Disability First Aid is different.....
The standard first aid course available in Australia is known as HLTAID011 Provide First Aid. It provides candidates with the skills to assist people in an emergency. However, the course does not teach the skills often required to save the lives of people with disabilities . For those who are employed as a disability carer, special needs teacher and friends or family who have a disability, a standard First Aid course often leaves them with more questions than answers.10735NAT-Course in Disability First Aid uses the principles of first aid and teaches the candidate to recognise and apply the variants required for a person with a disability. It uses a combination of theory and practical elements These include:
* CPR in a bed
* Responding to a seizure in a wheelchair
* Recognition and assistance for Autonomic Dysreflexia
* Choking in a bed
* Consent and communication in a disability setting
* Choking in a wheelchair
* Pressure sores and infection signs
* Understanding a Not for Resuscitation form
* How to use a bag valve mask (BVM) during CPR
* Recognising and responding to depression and suicide warning signs in a disability setting
